The Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycling Challenge and the Mizuno Half Marathon Have Selected Active and Times-7 Sport’s Premier Event Management Technology
SAN DIEGO, CA – August 14, 2008 – The Active Network, Inc. (Active), a leading worldwide provider of online entry and event management technology, announced today it has expanded its presence in the New Zealand sports market. Active has signed a technology agreement with Times-7 Sport (Times-7), a leading provider of timing and identification technology, and has been selected by Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge and the Mizuno Half Marathon to provide online entry to its thousands of participants. Active will be providing technology for over 100 events in New Zealand this year and continues to strengthen its presence in the region.
Active and Times-7 have teamed up to combine Active’s online entry and marketing solutions with Times-7’s world class timing technologies to offer a one-stop solution for online entry, timing, searchable results, Web sites, training programmes and marketing.
“The shared goals of Active and Times-7 made a partnership not only logical, but exciting,” explained Michael Lynch, general manager of Times-7 Sport. “It is our goal to provide customers with unparalleled service and technology, and working with Active will allow us to do that across all levels of event organisation.”
Active was also selected by Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, one of the largest cycling events in the Southern Hemisphere that attracts over 10,000 riders annually, as well as the Mizuno Half Marathon in Taupo, to provide online entry. Active’s online solutions offer both events secure payment processing, real-time data management, and local and global marketing opportunities. Times-7 has also been contracted by both events to provide their timing technology.
“Our objective was to provide online entry and easy-to-use, efficient technology that emphasises security and data privacy,” said Rob McKnight, sponsorship and marketing director of Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge. “Active is an industry leader with years of experience and can provide the online features we need while allowing us to increase awareness and participation through their global marketing resources.”
In addition to Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge and the Mizuno Half Marathon, Active has been providing online entry to other events in New Zealand for many years, including Ironman New Zealand and the Port Tauranga Half Ironman.
“Active has been a strong partner of Ironman New Zealand, Tauranga Half Ironman and the SPARC REAL Women’s Duathlon for a number of years providing an efficient and reliable online registration service for competitors around the world,” explained Jane Patterson, event director of Ironman New Zealand. “We look forward to continuing our relationship with Active in the future.”
Active has a team of staff members based in New Zealand to provide local support for customers.

Times-7 ahead of pack with RFID tags

Challenge: A railway company was replacing their 15 year old active RFID wagon tracking system with a modern UHF Gen2 based solution. The environment is particularly harsh where tags are exposed 24x7 to climate extremes from well below freezing to hot desert conditions. With the decision made to use passive tags instead of active, the challenge was to fi nd the best performing and hard wearing passive tags available in the market.
Solution: A Times-7 on-metal tag which outperformed the read distance of competitive sized products by 100%. Designed to balance performance, durability and affordability, the Times-7 tag is long lasting and delivers a compelling alternative to more expensive active tags.
Current bar code-based airport baggage tracking systems offer typical identification rates of <90%, meaning too many bags are manually handled. A Times-7 SlimLine Reader Station combines leading RFID readers with Times-7's SlimLine antenna to produce a small, compact unit which is quick and easy to install, and provides read rates of 99.9% at one quarter the price of competitive offerings.
