How we are preparing for the EU's Digital Product Passport

As Europe prepares to implement the Digital Product Passport (DPP), we are taking proactive steps to ensure transparency, compliance, and sustainability across its operations. From material traceability to responsible sourcing, we are aligning our manufacturing practices with evolving global standards to support a more sustainable future for the RFID industry.

DPP as a catalyst for global supply chain transformation

The European Union’s Digital Product Passport (DPP) initiative is set to become a major catalyst for change across global supply chains. The foundation for this comes from the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which took effect in 2024. This regulation aims to improve transparency around product origins, materials, and environmental impact from manufacturing through to end-of-life disposal.

Every product will carry it's own identity

Under this regulation, products will effectively gain a digital identity, a traceable record that details each components material composition, origin and environmental impact. This information will be made accessible across the product’s lifecycle, creating a network of data that enhances circularity, sustainability, and accountability. This means the end of fragmented documentation and the beginning of a continuous, real-time digital trail.

RAIN RFID technology stands as one of the possible carriers for DPP because of its ability to link physical items to digital records efficiently and at scale. Initial DPP requirements will be phased in from 2027, starting with priority categories such as textiles, batteries and electronics, with more sectors expected to follow.

For manufacturers and supply chain partners, this transition represents both a challenge and an opportunity to prepare early, align operations with emerging requirements, and stay ahead of regulatory and market expectations.

Meeting DPP requirements aligns with our business strategy and brand values

With 90 percent of our products distributed globally, and Europe representing a significant share of that, the DPP is not just a regional development, it is a strategic priority for our business and our customers.

We are responding to regulations by proactively integrating them into the way we work, in line with our core values of Sustainability, Reliability and Responsiveness.

Steps we are taking

  • Investigating product life cycle analyses, helps us understand and minimise environmental impact from material sourcing through to product disposal. This insight supports better design decisions and sustainable manufacturing practices.

  • In parallel, we are systematically gathering material composition data for all products. This will ensure compliance with major international standards such as RoHS and REACH (EU). These initiatives strengthen supply chain transparency and enable rapid adaptation to global regulatory changes.

  • Voluntarily aligning with EU iron and steel sanctions and other international environmental directives helps us maintain a high ethical standard.
  • By adhering to 3TG conflict mineral guidelines we ensure our materials are responsibly sourced and free from links to armed conflict or human rights violations.

We work to embed sustainability, compliance, and responsible sourcing into every stage of our operations to contribute to a cleaner, more ethical future for the RFID industry and the wider global community.
